I know I might sound a little pushy,...
Any update on the host thing yet?

Of course if you wanted to go the dogs bollocks and bees knees and not go with any hosts anymore you can always go this route so we have our own host to use plus after buying it you won't have to pay other than upgrades to the hard drive and RAM possiblely server operating system in the future not to forget the final peice of the puzzle our domain name. ;)

Private might be our only way to survive as long as we can keep the domain name we will be better off this route if we can afford one.

When I was still admin, the theme archive held about ~4,5GB of themes or so (which might not seem much, but I guess the traffic kills it for this place), but with the load of iTunes/ShopTNA releases i'd estimate that number to have doubled, if not tripled. So supposedly we got a good 12GB worth of themes.

EDIT: After reviewing Terran's post again, he said we have circa 9000 mp3s on the server. With an average of 5MB per file that'd be about 45GBs.

@TR: Thanks for all the years of solid theming service! I wish I could've been more supportive (financially ;) )but I'm in a tough spot when it comes to my budget (mostly due to my education plans), and I'm sure that goes for a lot of folks here. Though I'm pretty sure I can speak for all if I say your efforts are valued incredibly high.

Raven

P.S: Maybe a backup of all the content to MEGA? :)

True. Getting a server is maybe a bit over expensive plus it's finding somewhere to put the thing.

It's still the ultimate option to go for if the years worth you normally pay for your host per year goes towards it as I'm sure you went with the maximum version whilst you were with the hostgator which costs in a year probably as much as a minimum price hardware server would cost.

I don't think it's a case of getting rid of everything, but rather reducing the amount that's on there. This is why I think my idea is a good one. I have hostgator and I pay $10 a month, I have multiple websites on there, so I guess it's down to what else he has up. If members paid $1 every two months then we could afford for a second server from host gator which could have albums etc uploaded. That is just a possibility. I still think my first idea is probably the best way to go.

Like uncut versions only with no edited versions or multiples? I agree that could work. :D

Whoever wants WWE/FCW/WCW/TNA edits tough I agree with Craig thats a great way of limiting the content.

Downgrading the quality but not so much to make it sound Mono even if it's saved in Stereo is also a good idea as that bitrate 128kbs is still good enough to listen to without people complaining about shit quality.

All tracks singlely, longest lengh versions, only unedited production themes without edits and a 128kbs bitrate should sort out the problem.

Most of the ITunes and albums section are relisted as used themes as well so need to take control of that as they count as uploaded doubles as well like the WWE ect. edits do.

I know, I'm not much of a regular poster on here and that my contributions to XT were as ridiculous as just one or two themes, but I'd hate to lose touch to you guys too! :(

And I'm aware that it may sound strange coming from a German who's pretty much obsessed with themes but mostly nothing more than a silent reader.

When XT came back from that last hiatus with an open registration for that short period of time in 2009, I was so stoked. I don't want this site to vanish. :(
And if it has to, I sincerely hope I can stay in touch with all of you folks one way or another...

I don't think dropping the quality is way to go.

I think it's better that all the albums would be hosted on 3rd party sites like Sendspace, Mega, Dropbox, whatever, you name it. And if you want to play it safe, give them odd names and use password protection. Only the most important music would be hosted on the site itself and that being wrestler themes, tv/ppv show themes and maybe miscellaneous ones too. All the other stuff would be on 3rd party sites. My guess is that would cut at least 1/3 of the current size.

And I don't have problem donating to this site if it's really needed.

How about the themes that are repeated are linked to ONE FILE. do we really need themes with (Cut Intro) or for example... how many knockouts used "Girls Girls Girls Girls Girls" in 2002-2004 lol

That could at least LOWER the amount of space

That wouldn't work, because it would take a huge part of themeing idea away. If you would want to take all the intro cuts away, you would also have to take away Rock's Hollywood theme, Sheamus and many others. And what we would have left after that would be "HEY SHEAMUS USES INTRO CUT VERSION, BUT WE CAN'T OFFER IT TO YOU SO YOU HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF". How about themes with added quote? That's a duplicate in theory as well.

Just no.

This, it's stolen from my idea but it explains it better and the 128 bitrate is an opional middle ground quality that cuts down the size of your themes but they still sound decent therefore both things together would save Xylot. ;)

I didn't talk about themes with intros added they do not add a million doubles only 1 or 2. We are talking about non sensical ones to have ie like intro cuts which actually ruin a production track in my mind instead of improving it making it a total waste of upload space double rather than a worthwhile double with a self made intro like some of them.

It's all about finding a middle ground, downgrading them to 128 which is still a good quality and eliminating intro cuts but not the ones with self made intros is the perfection of middle ground.

We have to do whatever it takes to save the site and if going for a hardware server downgrading themes to middle ground 128 and elliminating intro cuts but not intros to make it still being able to be hosted on this server or moving to Go Daddy I welcome the entire lot of the ideas because we need to be saved.

To me intro cuts are worthless but intro edits may be worthwhile to keep and having them all in 128k would make me happy if it keeps the site going again it's all about finding the middle ground to make the current or new whatever it may be host happy.

giving certain members a 'department' to look after could work. for example, somebody could have game rips, or cd rips and then somebody else could maybe share the main WWE Superstar count with somebody else. Same with each respective promotion and their branching departments. what this would do is spread around the mp3 files on different accounts, having that space to play with. each member is also responsible for maintaining his department. so when it needs updating, he updates it.

not everybody is going to want to maintain their own department, but then it's only like when the mods upload a theme, make an edit or change a few details here and there.

I know I don't post here too often, but I've been coming to this site for years now. Hell, I couldn't even say how long. It's definitely sad to see this happen. This site was/is without a doubt the single greatest collection of themes I've ever known. Whether or not this is the end, I would like to thank anyone and everyone whose contributions made it what it was.
